The pre-instructions for the beans are written on the Step by Step photo guide.

Pick, rinse and drain the pinto beans.

*Pro Tip 1: You don’t have to pre-soak the pinto beans for this recipe. Although beans have a relatively long shelf life, older beans may take a much longer cooking time to be softened. So, it’s best to use fresh dry beans if possible!

I’ve tried refried beans from another popular website, and they were okay. But these are way better.

Even though these can be cooked from unsoaked beans, I did soak. The one time I tried pressure cooking unsoaked beans, my tummy was unhappy. I did remove some of the bacon grease before sautĂ©ing onions, because there was more than I was comfortable with. When tasting at the end, I added a little ham Better than Bouillon rather than plain salt. These are very tasty – they don’t need the toppings! But we’ll try that way with dinner. 🙂
